What to check next

This table taxes salary and nothing else — standard deduction, no state tax, no adjustments. Four rules created or expanded for 2026 shrink the taxable part further, and three of them work without itemizing, so they reach almost everyone reading this page.

  • If part of that salary came from overtime, the premium half is deductible up to $12,500 ($25,000 on a joint return). The table taxes those hours as ordinary wages; the deduction hands some of it back at filing time. Calculate your overtime deduction →
  • Financed a new car in 2026? Up to $10,000 of the interest is deductible, provided the vehicle was finally assembled in the United States — and a VIN lookup settles that in a few seconds rather than a phone call to the dealer. Check your VIN →
  • Pre-tax health contributions are the one item here that also beats FICA. Because payroll deductions come out before the 7.65%, each dollar you route through them saves more than your income tax rate alone would suggest. See 2026 HSA and FSA limits →
  • At 65 or older there is a further $6,000 per person — $12,000 for a couple who both qualify — stacked on top of the extra standard deduction seniors already receive, phasing out from $75,000 of income. Check the senior deduction →

FAQ

How much of my salary do I actually take home?

For most salaries between $50k and $150k, federal income tax plus FICA (Social Security 6.2% and Medicare 1.45%) takes roughly 20–25%, so you keep about 75–80% before state tax and benefits. The effective rate rises with income because federal brackets are progressive.

How do I calculate take home pay from my salary?

Subtract the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100 from your gross salary, apply the federal brackets to what is left, then take Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) off the full salary rather than the reduced figure. What remains is federal take-home pay. State tax, if your state has one, comes out on top of that.

Does this include state income tax?

No. The figures are federal only, because state rules vary too much to fold into one table and nine states have no income tax at all. Treat your state and local tax as a further deduction from the numbers shown.

What assumptions does this table use?

Single filer, 2026 standard deduction ($16,100), W-2 wages only, and no state or local income tax. Pre-tax benefits like 401(k) or HSA contributions are not included, and adding yours would make the estimate closer to your own case.

What changed for take-home pay in 2026?

The IRS inflation adjustments (Rev. Proc. 2025-32) raised the standard deduction to $16,100 and widened every bracket, and the Social Security wage base rose to $184,500. If your raise merely matched inflation, your effective federal rate stays about flat.
